The Story Behind the Project
For Bloom & Rooted founder Felicia, this project was more than an installation. It was an opportunity to contribute to a place that has been part of her story for a lifetime.
As a San Diego native, Felicia grew up exploring Balboa Park, visiting its museums, walking through its gardens, and creating memories with her family. The Fleet Science Center was one of the places that inspired her curiosity and creativity as a child, making the opportunity to design a permanent installation for the space especially meaningful.
Inspired by California's natural beauty, the preserved moss wall reflects the textures, colors, and movement found throughout Southern California's coastlines, rolling hills, and hiking trails. The design was intentionally created to feel organic, timeless, and deeply connected to its surroundings.
More than a decorative feature, the installation represents Bloom & Rooted's belief that nature has the power to inspire, educate, and create meaningful connections. Every element was selected with care to create a lasting experience for visitors while celebrating the intersection of science, sustainability, art, and community.
Today, the installation stands as a permanent contribution to one of San Diego's most treasured public spaces, allowing future generations to experience a piece of nature-inspired design for years to come.

"I thought about my daughters. About future grandchildren. About the visitors from all over the world who will walk past this wall and not know how much love went into it. This is a piece of Bloom & Rooted that will outlast any event or workshop. It's lasting."
— Felicia, Founder of Bloom & Rooted
Design Inspiration

Why These Materials Were Selected
We chose preserved moss because it gives you all the beauty and texture of nature
without the upkeep of living plants. We layered multiple moss varieties at different
elevations to create depth, movement, and that organic, landscape-inspired feel — like
you’re looking at a piece of California terrain.
Every shade of green was chosen intentionally to reflect the diversity of our local
ecosystems while creating a calming, immersive experience for visitors.

Sustainability Considerations
Sustainability isn’t just a talking point for us — it’s built into how we design. Preservedmoss requires no water, no fertilizers, no pesticides, and no electricity. There’s noirrigation system, no ongoing maintenance schedule. The materials do the work long-term, which means a lower environmental footprint without sacrificing the experience.
